Fixturing for Firearm Components
- Industry: Defense
- Process: Milling
- MGI Division: The Robert E. Morris Company
- Outcome: Successful process making M16 bolt carriers at the proper volume and with superb accuracy
» Challenge
Develop a creative engineering solution to help a customer make his bolt carrier parts significantly faster and with better quality.
» Solution
Along with the proprietary fixture, we thought the MB46 VMC would be the ideal machine for the functionality, speed, and accuracy it would offer this customer. The basis for all Okuma vertical machining centers, the MB Series sets the bar for efficiency and utility. An impressive thermal stability and zero table overhang allow for tight tolerances and extreme accuracy. The ergonomic front-access design of the Okuma MB Series requires minimal floor space while yielding maximum results. In addition, the MB Series is environmentally friendly, requiring no hydraulic fluid. Construction optimization based on FEM analysis and a rapid spindle traverse with Hi-G acceleration combine to create a solid, nimble machine that delivers on its promise of speed and accuracy, time and time again.
» Assessment
A great customer of ours was struggling to make M16 bolt carriers at the correct production rate and with acceptable quality. The Robert E. Morris engineers would need to develop a creative workholding fixture to simplify the process and increase productivity.
» Results
We proved out the parts and the customer was thrilled. The MB system is running successfully with a high level of accuracy, minimal operator involvement, and minimal thermal changes. The customer notes that the parts are consistent and predictable.
